The Calverton Tornadoes is a U-18 girls team playing in WAGS (the Washington Area Girls Soccer League). Players born on or after August 1, 1992, are eligible for the Tornadoes.

The team consists of highly skilled, highly motivated, athletic girls determined to keep the team among the very best in the State of Maryland.

The team is coached by Bob Sowers and Jenny Keehan. Head coach Sowers has led teams to many prestigious titles in elite competition in the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL), WAGS, and tournaments up and down the East Coast over the past 30 years. Both coaches are licensed in Maryland (coach Sowers hold a USSF National D license and is working towards a National C license this summer), and both coaches have worked with the team since the team was U-9. The coaches are volunteers, and the team fees charged to players are kept low (usually about $225 to $250 a season) because the team is sponsored by generous contributions from several local businesses. Our player fees, including winter indoor play, usually run only about $600 per year.

We provide year-round training that is challenging, fun, and exciting for players that really want to excel. Our team takes great pride in developing individual skill and believes that attitude is everything--in soccer and in life. We apply our great work ethic and attitudes to our entire lives, not just to soccer. We are more than just a team to each other; we are family!

In practice, we work hard but we have a blast doing it. The coaches plan practices that involve small-sided games that are fun and geared toward developing particular skills and tactics. Each practice generally focuses on a particular topic and builds in progression from easy (with no pressure on the ball) to harder and more complex (with more pressure on the ball and more tactics). The players are challenged to improve in a fun, effective way, and encouraged to build individual leadership skills. The parents are encouraged to enjoy the progress of the whole team and each individual player and to not focus on their individual daughter.

Calverton is located between I-95 and Route 29 in Silver Spring, Maryland, about 6 miles north of the Washington, DC, Beltway (Route 495) and about halfway between downtown Silver Spring and Columbia, Maryland. The Calverton Soccer Club is a small, but growing club; it's grown from about 4 teams to about 30 over the past 12 years.
